Lab Management
The OCPD provides training for UCSF students and scholars to develop their leadership and management skills. Opportunities include:
Course in Scientific Leadership And Laboratory Management
Offered every other year, this intensive two-day course is co-sponsored
by the UCSF Office of Postdoctoral Education, the J. David Gladstone
Institutes and the Buck Institute for Age Research.
The inaugural course, offered in December 2005, covered such topics as:
- Leadership Styles
- Giving and Receiving Feedback
- Working with Others
- Working Through Others
- Acquiring and Using Organizational Power
- Understanding University Structure and the Tenure Process
- Managing Your Time More Effectively
- Developing Budgets for Grant Applications and Start-up Packages
- Staffing Your Lab: Recruiting and Retaining the Best
The course is modeled after the successful course of the same name designed by Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and makes use of the HHMI book Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty.
