PASS is a series of intensive workshops designed to enhance the
professional development of UCSF students and
scholars engaged in research.

SESSION 1: Publishing Your Research
Thursday, Sept. 4, 1-5 p.m.
Gain advice from faculty panelists on how to handle the politics of publishing research papers, including authorship, responding to reviewers, and interacting with editors. In break-out groups, learn key principles for writing basic science or clinical science papers.
SESSION 2: Giving a Dynamic Research Talk
Thursday, Nov. 20, noon-5:30 p.m.
Learn how to apply professional delivery techniques, effective organizational strategies, and improved PowerPoint design to present your science with impact. Then, practice your presentation skills and get individualized feedback in small groups led by faculty.
SESSION 3: Setting Goals for Your Career Direction and Professional Growth
Friday, Jan. 30, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Examine your skills, interests, and values to consider your career trajectory. Learn how to explore career options. Hear from a panel of UCSF alumni about how they chose their respective career paths. Map out your individual development plan for the coming year. Learn best practices for discussing this plan with your team of mentors.
SESSION 4: Building Your Professional Network
Friday, March 26, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. >>> NOTE: DATE CHANGE
Learn how to initiate, organize and maintain a network to promote your academic and professional success at any career stage. Sketch your own networking plan. Practice techniques for engaging in productive conversation in different contexts, including conferences, social events, and informational interviews.
SESSION 5: Funding Your Research >>> NOTE: DATE CHANGES (BELOW)
Learn from faculty how the NIH is structured and how a grant is reviewed during study section. Gain tips about the writing and application process from guest speakers including editors, faculty, and prior awardees.

Pre-register for this series. This is a three-part mini-series. One registration, one price ($15/$25; see below) gives you access to all three parts of this mini-series. Pre-registration will be available until Friday, April 24. If space is available, on-site registration will be $25.

SESSION 6: Tackling Difficult Conversations

Relationships in the research arena can be challenging. When sensitive or difficult conversations arise, you want to approach them appropriately to optimize your chances of a successful exchange, and react professionally if things turn sour. Learn from an expert in communication and conflict resolution why difficult conversations go wrong and how to prepare for a productive exchange. In this interactive session you will dissect scenarios that may occur in a research setting, and learn strategies for handling similar cases.
Cost and Registration: Registration fees help cover the cost of guest speakers, food and handouts for each event or set of events. To register, please click on the title of the PASS session you'd like to attend. Registration will be available one month prior to the event. On-site registration may be available.
