Preparing Future Faculty
A division of the Office of Career & Professional Development

Who We Serve…

UCSF students and post-graduate trainees from all disciplines who are interested in teaching, learning, and academic careers.

How We Serve You…

Events
We host a variety of events — workshops, courses, seminars, panel discussions, symposia — to help you explore academic career options, to aid you in the academic job search, to develop your teaching skills and to connect UCSF with world leaders in science education.

Teaching Opportunities
We offer a variety of opportunities to gain mentored teaching experience as a student or post-graduate trainee at UCSF. Teach undergraduate science courses as a guest lecturer, team-teacher, or instructor of record at a Bay Area college or university.

Teaching Resources
We offer a variety of resources on how people learn, how to teach science courses, and how to teach in the clinic setting. Here you can find links to valuable online teaching resources, including handouts and articles, professional associations and journals for science education, and books available from the OCPD library.

Academic Job Search Resources
Here you’ll find articles on how to succeed in the academic job search; samples and guidelines for creating your CV, cover letter, research statement, and statement of teaching philosophy; and links to websites with faculty job postings.

Other Skills
Return to the main OCPD website for workshops and resources to help you develop other skills necessary for careers in academia, including grant writing, lab management, ethics, how to give a scientific presentation, etc.

Individual Appointments
Schedule an appointment to confidentially discuss career options in academia and your individual plan to become better prepared for such careers. Discuss teaching strategies or practice a lesson/lecture. Gain tips on your CV, cover letter, and research/teaching statements.

PFF Listserv
PFF has an active e-mail listserv! Here you'll find a description of the listserv and instructions for how to join.

Alumni Participation
Some of the most popular PFF events are panels featuring UCSF alumni who have followed career paths in academia. Please contact us if you are interested in a visit back to UCSF!
