PFF is currently expanding. If a program is not already designed specifically for your population or specialty, consider attending a program for another population many of the principles for these skills areas are the same. And please contact us! We're happy to work with you to design a program specific to your population's needs.
PFF Summer Series
A weekly series of seminars, workshops, and faculty panels focused on how to teach and how to obtain an academic job. This series introduces general principles and special topics generally applicable to all UCSF populations, with some examples and speakers focusing on the basic life sciences.

Teaching Workshops And Courses
- BEST (Becoming an Effective Science Teacher): Theory and Practice — a course for UCSF graduate teaching assistants and PFF Teaching Apprentices.
- Teaching workshops (with examples for teaching students at the K-12 grade levels) are also offered through UCSF's Science and Health Education Partnership.
Career Exploration
We coordinate seminars and panel discussions featuring faculty in a variety of academic settings. These events are typically held every other year. Examples of such workshops include:
- Symposium of the Professoriate for Life Sciences
- Demystifying Academic Careers in Pharmacy (planned in collaboration with the APhA)
- Academic Careers Symposium for Doctorally-Prepared Nurses
Academic Job Search
We coordinate seminars and panel discussions to help you prepare for the academic job search, including preparing your application package, interviewing, and negotiating your startup package.
These events are typically held annually or every other year (click here to see a list of this year's offerings). Examples of such workshops include:
- Preparing your faculty application package
- Preparing a winning research statement
- Interviewing, job/chalk talks
- Negotiating your startup package
- Giving a dynamic research talk including tips for preparing your job talk

PASS Professional And Academic Success Skills
PASS is a series of intensive workshops designed to enhance the professional development of graduate and professional students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, and junior faculty. Topics include: writing and publishing research articles, grant writing, building your professional network, giving a dynamic presentation, etc.
