Overview

How do you find out what careers are available to you, and evaluate whether or not they'd be a good fit? You can start with reading up (we'll tell you where); the next step is to talk to people (we'll tell you how). This workshop will include an interactive deep-dive into using LinkedIn as a research tool, and a step-by-step look at how and why to conduct informational interviews. Join us to learn about the often-misunderstood process of networking, which is really just about expanding your community – it might even be fun?

This session is offered by instructors from the MIND Program.

Learning outcomes

This session is intended for advanced PhD students and postdocs who are exploring multiple career paths. After this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Use LinkedIn to find job titles, employers, and networking contacts of interest
  2. Articulate the steps you can take to expand your network of people in a career path that interests you
  3. Write successful "invitations to connect" to people you don't already know
  4. Prepare for an informational interview with someone you don't already know
  5. Ask informational interview questions appropriate to your current career exploration stage
  6. Help others expand their networks
