Conducting Inclusive and Effective Interviews

By this point in your career you've done interviews as part applications, but you may have only been on the interviewee side. In your time at UCSF, you may start having opportunities to be on the interviewer side. This workshop is for students and postdocs who will be in that position, for example, as part of recruitment efforts for their program, or as part of hiring a new lab member.

In this workshop, we'll share evidence-based practices for inclusive interviewing that will help you prepare for your interviews, conduct them more comfortably, and assess your candidates' answers. In alignment with the principle of backwards design, we'll start by making sure you have an understanding of the qualities and competencies of your desired candidate. Then we'll demonstrate how to craft and deliver questions that get you helpful information about those qualities and competencies. Finally, we'll discuss how bias comes up in the process and provide strategies for mitigating your bias, including the use of rubrics. You'll leave the workshop with a list of questions you can use in your own interviews.

Learning Outcomes

In this interactive session, you will learn:

  1. How bias manifests during an interview process (including specific types of bias: prestige/pedigree bias, group think, the halo effect, confirmation bias, status quo bias, authority bias, false consensus, stereotyping, blind spot bias, and others)
  2. Checks and balances to mitigate your own bias during an interview process
  3. How to design questions to obtain relevant information
  4. How to design a rubric to assess responses
