Letter from the Director

Welcome!

Career and professional development are central to the success of our students and postdoctoral scholars, to workforce readiness, and to UCSF’s mission to train the next generation of biomedical leaders.

We believe UCSF-trained scientists, clinicians, and social scientists belong wherever decisions about health, science, and society are made, at the bench and in the clinic, and also in industry, policy, entrepreneurship, communication, and public service.

The Office of Career and Professional Development partners across UCSF to help trainees explore career paths, make informed decisions, and position themselves competitively for the work they choose. Our programs are evidence-based, values-driven, and designed to build both practical skills and durable professional support networks. When UCSF graduates bring their training and judgment into diverse sectors, they strengthen outcomes across research, healthcare, and society.

What distinguishes our unit is not just what we offer, but how we work. We design interventions around clearly defined needs, align with institutional priorities such as student success and workforce development, and collaborate across UCSF and the UC system to extend reach and impact. Our efforts are grounded in learning science and real trainee experience, and our goal is to work with the schools, departments and groups across our institution to surround every UCSF student and postdoc in a learning cluster of career and professional development training, resources, and community.

Whether you are exploring next steps, supporting trainees, or thinking about workforce preparation, we invite you to engage with our office. Come early and come often; we're here to help.

Warmly,

Naledi Saul
Director. The Office of Career and Professional Development
