Overview

Once you have a career path in mind, it's a great idea to find a way to get some experience. Options for this experience (we call it "experiential learning") range from part-time projects, to formal full-time internships. Deciding which is the right fit for you will depend on two things: your goals (what are you hoping to learn? with whom are you hoping to connect? what kind of skills do you want to practice?) and your parameters (do you need to be in a certain location? how much time do you have available? are there visa considerations that apply?).

We'll help you sort through these various considerations, and map out a plan for how to proceed. Afterwards, we'll be available for your questions in Office Hours on February 13, February 20, and February 27.

Pre-work for this workshop:

  • Come with one or two career paths in mind, which you'd like to explore in greater depth

Learning outcomes

This session is intended for advanced PhD students and postdocs who are exploring multiple career paths. After this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Assess your own goals and parameters for an internship or experiential learning opportunity
  2. Evaluate whether an experiential learning opportunity is a good fit for your goals and parameters
  3. Identify the relevant stakeholders with whom you need to discuss your experiential learning goals
  4. Describe the application and networking strategy that will help you achieve your goal
  5. Create a timeline of personalized next steps
