Are OCPD appointments private or confidential?

OCPD appointments are private, but not confidential

At the Office of Career and Professional Development, we aim to protect information about our clients. We do not keep notes, and usually information from a conversation will not be shared unless the client gives permission. However, there are limitations. Because we value protecting client information, it is important that clients understand the limitations to our privacy and knowingly choose what to share with us.

Staff of the Office of Career and Professional Development are considered "Responsible Employees" under University of California Office of the President policy. We are not Confidential Resources. This means we have an obligation to share information we receive about violations or potential violations of the policies below:

This applies to any communication with OCPD staff, including email and conversations held outside of an appointment.

In order to protect client information, we do our best to make clients aware of our privacy policy. When it would be helpful, we connect clients with relevant resources, including Confidential Resources on campus.

Where to get confidential support

For anyone looking for confidential support around topics relating to any of the UC policies listed above, please refer to the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination's resources page, which has links to confidential offices that students and postdocs can use to discuss any sensitive concerns.
