Series Overview

This workshop is part of a three-part series, below you will find information and registration links for each of the three workshops. The workshops are offered at no cost and space is limited, so register soon if you're interested. If you take all three workshops, you can earn a certificate of completion. (If registration is full, you can take this workshop as a self-paced course on iBiology.)

If you wish to participate, we request that you, at least, commit to two of the three workshops, inclusive of the first session. The Business Development and Finance sessions build upon the concepts presented in Business Strategy. You will not get the most out these workshops if you attend only the last one.

Social and population scientists are welcome!
The case studies are set in lab-based contexts, but the concepts covered in these workshops are applicable to careers that social and population scientists enter.

Overview - Business Strategy for Scientists

Register for Business Strategy for Scientists

September 10, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Business Strategy for Scientists is designed to teach researchers how scientists develop and execute strategy. Participants will learn and apply basic concepts of business strategy (e.g. identifying stakeholders, determining value proposition, and defining vision) in academic and industry settings. This workshop is geared towards graduate students and postdocs pursuing a career in industry or business of science, or planning to start an academic lab. The concepts are applicable for social and population scientists interested in business, but the examples and case studies come from life science labs. Learn more about this series on iBiology.

Overview - Business Development for Scientists

Register for Business Development for Scientists

September 24, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Business Development for Scientists is designed to teach researchers how business development contributes to a scientific enterprises's vision, goals, and deal types. Participants will learn and apply basic concepts of business development (e.g. deal structure, deal funding, and collaborations) in academic and industry settings. This workshop is geared towards graduate students and postdocs pursuing a career in industry or business of science, or planning to start an academic lab. The concepts are applicable for social and population scientists interested in business, but the examples and case studies come from life science labs.

Overview - Finance for Scientists

Register for Finance for Scientists

October 8, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Finance for Scientists is designed to give researchers an overview of financial statements and concepts in financial planning. Participants will learn and apply basic concepts of business finance (e.g. calculating burn rate, opportunity cost, and net present value) in academic and industry settings. This workshop is geared towards graduate students and postdocs pursuing a career in industry or business of science, or planning to start an academic lab. The concepts are applicable for social and population scientists interested in business, but the examples and case studies come from life science labs.
