In the scientist role - it's good to know how the science works and to get funded and published, too. So both the micro and the macro aspects of the enterprise.

It is also helpful to have an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the research enterprise, not only those in the lab but the administrators that help the faculty.
