Understanding the Scientific Enterprise as a Science Program Officer in a Nonprofit
My job is at a non-profit organization that funds people and projects in science. Many of the proposed ideas are about long-term issues that are part of the scientific enterprise. It is important to being aware about how science really is done (not just the public's perception of how science is done.) Example areas that require this knowledge include: promotion and tenure system's impact on collaborative science, barriers to data sharing, COVID-impact on job market, etc.

In coordinating scientific internships - it's good to know how an enterprises function and what roles the scientists and staff play and the external forces that impact an enterprise. In the scientist role - it's good to know how the science works and to get funded and published, too. So both the micro and the macro aspects of the enterprise.

It helps to have an overall understanding of the grant process and what is required to submit a grant proposal. It is also helpful to have an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the research enterprise, not only those in the lab but the administrators that help the faculty.
