  • I plan to rely on the framework and strategies that were taught and practiced during the…course. The seven steps of an effective mentor were excellent for me to refer back to and have as core concepts that I can remind myself of regularly. - Postdoc, UCSF
  • As a junior faculty, this was a game changer for me. I heard about the course word of mouth as did others - the course was packed with over two hundred from UCSF, community college and industry - such is the value of her work. This is the best formal teaching I have had at UCSF ever…Naledi gave me a framework and tool kit to manage - hire, set expectations, deal with conflict, reflect on values, and give feedback, etc. It is having [an] immediate impact on my lab, which will help foster our cutting-edge science.

Most importantly, while so many of us are committed to DEI work, I feel that most of the programming at UCSF and elsewhere has been centered on identifying the problem(s). While this is important, many of us are eager to also be proactive. Naledi provided evidence-based organizational methods and best practices to improve equity in our labs, on our teams, and within our organization   - Faculty, UCSF
  • This course was so valuable for teaching how to build more inclusive systems - it focused on very specific actions and frameworks with clear examples that were relevant to my daily life. The instructors provided strategies that I could start practicing immediately in my current position. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to lead a team! - Postdoc, UCSF
  • Having done many, many trainings like this over the course on my career, I went in with relatively low expectations. These modules far exceeded them. It was practical, well-organized, concrete, and extremely well executed. I learned a lot and can't wait to share it with my colleagues. 5 stars to Karen and Neledi and everyone else behind the scenes. - Senior Program Manager, UCSF
  • Great course for early career faculty. I think it should be offered in concert with Faculty Development Day or at least somehow scheduled in so that new faculty hires can know about it and take it. It would be great to have a cohort. Obviously I am a fan I've taken it twice, as a late stage postdoc and as new faculty.  It helped me to structure inclusivity into the hiring process. - Faculty, UCSF
  • Great resource and amazing lecturers. My biggest concern is that I will not be able to retain all the great information provided in the course. I highly recommend it. - Faculty, UCSF
  • I love the idea of building competency through backwards design. I used what I learned in the IRM/M trainings to build a pseudo-rubric in real time with the students I supervise. Now they know exactly what a "good" deliverable looks like, and what parts of that deliverable are most important to me. It empowered them in two ways: first, they were able to tell me what they thought was important to the project, and then could follow through on their own priorities. Second, it meant that the "finish line" was completely understood between all parties. It was a truly important experience for all of us. - Postdoc, UC Berkeley
  • As a postdoc interested in perhaps having my own lab some day, knowing how to navigate relationships with my mentee is a skill that I need. And this course gave me a good set of fundamentals to work with as I would begin to take on undergrad mentees during my time here. - Postdoc, UCSF
  • As a first time supervisor, this training was incredibly helpful for thoughtful onboarding, better understanding of expectations for my role, and how I can support a supervisee using resources available. Not only this, but many of the lessons were helpful in terms of working with colleagues as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone regardless of whether or not they are currently in a supervisory role. - Science Associate, UCSF

Thank you so much for a detailed and instructive course. It has, by far, set the standard for the environment I hope to work in and create for my future mentees.

Research Associate II, Bio-Rad Laboratories
  • This course opened my eyes to inclusivity in hiring, managing, interviewing and daily interactions at work in areas that may have been blind spots for me. We've been given tangible tools to use in conversations with our co-workers and management to bring more openness and understanding of each other in the workplace. I found workstyle preferences to be particularly useful and interesting for learning more about my colleagues and even how I work best.
  • While I've had quite a few years of experience in the past of managing people, when it comes to inclusivity, I think I've worked off gut instincts rather than having the training and knowledge to understand the tools, thought processes and strategies for inclusivity. - Associate Director, QA. Denali Therapeutics
  • This course has been a phenomenal and eye-opening learning experience about inclusivity, mentorship and people management. A must-have for all people that work with other people! - Scientist, Denali Therapeutics
  • After attending all the 7 sessions, I really do see the great value for investing your time in this training course. You will NOT regret the time you'll put into the materials, new ideas and insights, and mind-provoking concepts you'll learn how to be an effective but also INCLUSIVE manager in research settings. - Senior Associate Scientist, Amgen
  • Very informative and helpful workshop! Thank you! - Senior Scientist, BioLumen
  • This course defines it self to be a " Circle of support with empowered tools" - Community College Biology Faculty
  • The Inclusive Research Manager-Mentor course provided me with a number of incredibly useful frameworks and tools that I can use to effectively hire, manage and facilitate success across my team in an industry setting. In particular, I found the guidance on how to build a training plan and effectively communicate expectations to be especially helpful. Because many of us in science were trained to do science and not manage others, I've not had consistent examples of managers clearly communicating expectations and building training plans. This course gave me the tools to do exactly these things, which I believe will increase the productivity and overall success of my reports. - Manager, Caribou Biosciences
  • ANY person in a position of leadership from ANY field from ANYwhere can benefit from this course. Imagine all the healthy work environments and better quality of life companies and communities could have if they learned all the applicable information given in this course to make jobs and careers more safe and inclusive! I loved the explanations and data to back up the methods being taught along with the group and individual exercises in order to practice the concepts we learned. I took this course without having any mentees, but even still, there is so much information I can apply to myself and work on with my manager so I can perform better and be more qualified to achieve a promotion that would allow me to have direct reports. My big takeaway from this course is that having positive, honest, and inclusive communication will help everyone excel in their work (and in their life). - Research Associate, Bio-Rad
  • This course was one of the best courses on management that I have ever attended, and one of the few that I could find with a specific focus on inclusive practices. The content was of extremely high quality for me: while I was familiar with some of the introduced frameworks, there was a great deal of new information that I learned and that felt very relevant and immediately applicable to my job role. The facilitators did a great job at managing a large crowd online, and I appreciated the push to make sure we would put any take-home messages into practice as soon as possible to solidify the learning. Overall it was an enjoyable experience of professional development and professional growth. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to be a better mentor/manager/leader (in any field!), and will definitely follow these facilitators for any new content that they may produce in the future. - Director of Scientific Programs, Columbia University
  • I work a biotech company and I found the course materials to be relatable and relevant to not only my current work environment (as well as past academic experience) but also to my personal life. So many times, I have said to myself during one of the case studies, "This is exactly what happened before!". As my work schedule is always hectic and this course occurs over many weeks, I was at first hesitant to enroll in the course due to the time commitment. However, because active participation is not required, I have been able to complete my laboratory work while following along to the classes without affecting my work productivity. The pace of information is perfect for me -- every class is chock full of materials and presented in an enthusiastic, engaging way. I frequently struggle to pay close attention to online courses but I did not have trouble with this course. I truly enjoyed the classes. After the course, I feel that I have improved as a mentor and a supervisor. I am better equipped to contribute to a better work environment. I not only grew wiser in areas that I knew I struggled in, I also believe I have better improved mentor/supervisor skills I thought I excelled at. I have taken many mentor and diversity classes but this course really excelled at covering more topics and to a deeper depth. I have also had access to course materials that require payment and I think this course far exceeded the usefulness of the classes I had to pay for. I think this course is useful for everyone at every stage of mentorship -- those who are just starting or those with decades of experience. This course is also useful for mentees. Thank you for the opportunity to attend this class. I will continue to apply the knowledge that I learned and will save the notes to revisit in the future. - Senior Scientist, Navega Therapeutics
