Our health careers team specializes in assisting current UCSF students and recent alumni (up until 6 months out from graduation) who are pursuing health professional clinical career paths with their career and professional development concerns and goals.

Starting 9/12/24, we’ll be using a new appointment scheduling system. If you’re familiar with our previous system, you’ll notice some changes, but rest assured, the process for booking appointments will remain very similar. We appreciate your understanding as we make this transition!

Schedule a Career Counseling Appointment With One of Our Health Careers Counselors:
In order to maximize appointment availability, our team offers two career counseling options for health professional students:
- 30-minute Career Counseling Appointment
- Topics addressed for this option are: Career exploration, decision-making and planning, mentorship and enhacing professional communication, navigating difficult conversations and self advocacy, identifying barriers to integrating your professional identity, building your professional brand and community, strategizing our postgraduate residency or employment search, interviews and salary negotations
- 30-minute Application Materials Review Appointment
- Topics addressed for this option are limited to document reviews: CV, Resume, Cover Letter, Letter of Intent, SOM ERAS 10 Noteworthy Experiences, and Letter of Recomendation guidance
- Topics that will not be addressed for this option:
- Our office doesn’t review personal statements. Please see our Writing Resources page for statement writing guidance.
- Spring Quarter M4 MSPE Noteworthy Charateristic Reviews. These appointments should be booked under our 30-minute Career Counseling option, as they focus on helping students identify and articulate three themes for their Noteworthy Characteristics paragraph, in alignment with broader guidance for their ERAS application.
*Appointments open on a rolling basis, starting 21 days before each appointment date.
Anna Reeves, MS, Assistant Director, Health Careers
- Anna leads the Health Careers team, where she manages team operations, trains and supervises Health Careers staff and a graduate Career Counseling Intern, and provides career counseling while creating tailored programs and resources that guide students through complex workplace training concerns and career decision-making.
- She has supported health professional students at UCSF since 2015. Previously, she counseled pre-health students while working in UC Berkeley's Career Center.
Sarah Tanase, MA, Program Director, Health Careers
- Sarah designs and facilitates career and professional development programs, creates resources, and counsels students. She also co-supervises the Health Team's Career Outreach Peers.
- Sarah previously worked for Stanford Career Education, similarly developing a career development program curriculum and providing individual counseling to their students and alumni.
Can't find any open OCPD appointments?
Our team collects appointment scheduling preferences data to continually reassess and update our counseling appointment services. Therefore, if you can't find an open appointment to book - please share your feedback using our brief anonymous survey to share your appointment booking preferences.
Health Professional Appointment Booking Policies:
Appointments booked in violation of any of our policies will be canceled without notice.
- To maintain availability, each person can only book one appointment, with one counselor at a time.
- Please use your UCSF email when booking or your appointment may be canceled without notice.
- Please cancel your appointment within 24 hours of the appointment if you cannot make it. Students and postdocs who fail to cancel their appointments 3 times will be ineligible from accessing appointments for the remainder of that quarter, so please cancel and reschedule.
- Each person is limited to a maximum of 6 appointments per academic year.
- Health Professional appointments are exclusively for current UCSF Health Professional and clinically focused master's students. If you book an Health Professional appointment for assistance unrelated to a health practitioner career path, your appointment will be automatically canceled, and you will be encouraged to rebook with our Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Scholar team.
