Part of my job is to send out email communications to the staff and campus regarding updates to Sponsor and University policy. It is important that I can explain complex policies in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, I maintain our website, were I need to also communicate policies and procedures in a clear and concise manner. I also do virtual and in-person training for our staff and the campus. In my prior position in Office of Sponsored Research, I needed to email with faculty and sponsors.

In my current role, I work collaboratively with the rest of the Operations and Training staff to interpret policies and to update our procedures. I need to be able to edit, and comment on others training materials and communications. I also participate on committees to discuss changes and updates to UCSF policies and procedures.

It helps to have an overall understanding of the grant process and what is required to submit a grant proposal. It is also helpful to have an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the research enterprise, not only those in the lab but the administrators that help the faculty.

How do you apply this transferable skill in your position?

Although the policy career that I have is largely flat, there are opportunities to partner where you have to "manage up" to those who have more seniority and stronger relationships with the sponsor, but you have content knowledge. There are times when you have to manage your more junior team in order to produce the best policy resource.

How do you apply this transferable skill in your position?

When communicating data, especially orally, it is so important that you say when you don't know and only speak when you are certain. Loosing credibility means that you are less likely to be influential. The science policy world is a complex system of relationships and at the center is being known to be reliable, trustworthy, credible, -- essentially with integrity.
